English and Maths

English and Maths
English and Maths

English and Maths are the key facilitating (or gateway) subjects, in that everyone needs them at GCSE if they are to progress to university, and/or to the jobs to which Radleians usually aspire.

All boys study Maths and English up to GCSE, as part of the Core. The allocation is five periods per cycle for each subject in the Shell year and six for the GCSE years. English Literature is sat by the upper sets, and taught within the standard six period allocation. At A level, Single Maths and English are taught for ten periods a cycle, while Further Maths is allocated 16 periods.

After a brief and enjoyably unsuccessful ‘career’ writing and performing comedy, I became an English teacher in 2009. Since starting at Radley in 2015, I have always valued the diverse range of activities afforded to both Dons and boys alike. The richness of experience at the college makes for stimulating conversation and exploration in the classroom, something that leads to many boys performing with great success at GCSE, A-Level and beyond. There is no such thing as a typical Radleain, but the qualities of consideration, care and respect run through every classroom I have been in here. I continue to be impressed by the open-minded and thoughtful approach boys of all ages take to English. When not in the classroom, I enjoy visits to the cinema, playing golf, cricket, and running. I can also be found reading, engrossed in a film or slaving (willingly) over a stove. I am joined usually by my wife, Sarah and our two children, Oscar and Matilda.Head

I joined the Radley Maths Department straight from University, and with the exception of a term's teaching exchange to Manchester, I have taught at Radley ever since. In addition to the classroom I have worked as a marker, team leader and a Chief Examiner, at O level, GCSE and A level. I have also served on various government Mathematics panels and committees, and have authored and co-authored a number of Mathematics text books for both IB and for A level.
