The deadline for Application for the 2021 Music Scholarship has now passed. Late applications may be considered by emailing the Director of Admissions and Communications in the Admissions office.
2021 Entry deadline: 7 January 2021
Assessment days: 20/21 January 2021
Please note that given the national lockdown, for this year all candidates will be assessed remotely and full details will be sent upon receipt of an application form.
Music Scholarships and Exhibitions enable entry to Radley for unregistered candidates but only Scholarships can be supplemented by a means-tested bursary.
Music Award Holders will be expected to take Music GCSE.
Pre-Auditions: Around two years before entry an early meeting with the Warden and Precentor/Head of Instrumental Music is encouraged. This is an opportunity for an informal audition where guidance may be given as to the suitability for an Award. In the Michaelmas term prior to the Scholarship boys are encouraged to attend a further pre-audition at which there is the opportunity for more detailed guidance and constructive advice on how to prepare for an Award. In the first instance, please contact the Director of Admissions to arrange these auditions.
Scholarship Auditions: At the audition a boy will be asked:
- to perform a short (accompanied) piece given to him 20 minutes before, which will make appropriately modest technical demands (an accompanist will be provided)
- to perform two contrasting pieces on his main instrument; one contrasting piece on his other instrument(s) and/or to sing
- to answer questions of a general musical nature.
To gain an Award, a boy must have a genuine interest in or passion for music as well as demonstrating real musical achievement or exceptional promise. Associated Board Grade 6 may be taken as a guide to the minimum standard expected if only one instrument is offered. Lesser achievement in more areas of activity (including singing) may also impress the panel and lead to an Award, especially if there is clear potential for musical growth. Awards will be offered on the basis of their performance on the day.
Candidates who compose are encouraged to submit examples of their composition work along with their application forms.
