James Gaunt
James Gaunt
Director of Sport
I arrived at Radley College after nine very fond years at St Edward’s, Oxford, and two as Director of Sport and Head of Physical Education at Shiplake College, Henley on Thames. Before teaching I completed a BSc in Sport & Exercise Science at Exeter University and an MSc in Physiology at Worcester College, Oxford. Before switching my attention to running sporting programmes I enjoyed many fantastic years of playing sport. Despite enjoying almost all sports my background is primarily in rugby in which I have represented Newport Gwent Dragons, Exeter Chiefs, Oxford University and Henley Hawks. After playing in two Varsity games I have been lucky enough to continue my association with the match by way of coaching the Oxford Blues squad for the past ten years. During this time I have also worked as a skills coach for the England Students XV. I believe strongly in protecting the traditional values of a school whilst developing a sporting environment in which pupils of all abilities can strive for success, achieve that success and be rewarded for their accomplishment. My vision for Radley College sport is that the top teams and elite sportspeople get the opportunity to develop technically, making performance outcomes integral to their programmes, whilst the youngest and/or least naturally gifted individuals remain enthused and engaged in a programme of sport that develops them physically, socially and mentally throughout their five year education at the school. I consider working in sport to be a real privilege; to do that within the confines of Radley College is simply too special to summarise in words.

History Teacher, Senior Master
I am the Senior Master responsible for all Co-Curricular activities, including Games, Oxbridge, Art, Drama, Music, CCF and others. Before coming to Radley I studied History at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and I represented the university at rugby and hockey. I have been at Radley since 1993, as a History don, resident sub-tutor, Head of History, Common Entrance History examiner, and latterly the first Tutor of K Social and a governor of Elstree School. Ros and I were married here and Niamh and Fintan were both born here. Besides academic matters, I am a sports coach of Rugby, Hockey and Athletics, and I enjoy seeing the boys in all the different activities that Radley has to offer. My interests outside Radley include all things Irish, and the wines and culture of Languedoc-Roussillon and Catalonia.
